so, 'ethical me' has been spying these shoes from vegetarian shoes in brighton. they are made from all synthetic material, so perfect for those looking for 'ethical' shoes. from seeing them in the flesh ('scuse the pun!) they also look fab and suprisingly like suede.

but, whilst i'm still weaning myself off leather, i've also been admiring these....

particularly this gorgeous butterscotch coloured leather laptop bag from hard graft (previously working class heroes). their shop is also full of gorgeous asphalt black industrial felt accessories. on a similar work + leather theme, this bag from neikodesigns is a fab combination of simple modern lines and classic style design - I particularly like the masculine touch with the chrome handle.
i have a very secretive outfit planned for an upcoming 'A' fancy dress party (to dress as something beginning with the letter A) and stumbled across this beautiful leather fairy mask from faerywhere in my fancy dress foraging
more news on the fancy dress outfit soon....

I'm a vegetarian who also has struggled with the ethics of using leather. But there is simply no denying the fact that leather is a very practical material for shoes and some other things. Synthetic materials are most likely petroleum based, which brings up all kinds of horrible issues like pollution, garbage, invasions and war. You gotta choose your battles in this day and age, it's very very hard to do the "right" thing all the time.
My buying a pair of shoes every two years doesn't do much to support the meat industry in my opinion.
I think you're definately right about choosing your battles Jen, leather is going to be a future battle of mine but not one I'm ready to approach right now....but i do find it hard to justify to myself why i wear leather when i wouldn't eat the cow it came from for ethical reasons...i'll get there!
